Presentation review: Getting Started with Our Panel of Experts

This past week’s informative presentation discussed the value of nutrition, exercise, social support, motivation, coaching, and positive attitude. Traci Smet, director of the Ministry Community Weight Race, and Dr. Celine Kline, Lecturer in the field of Health Promotions and Human Development at UWSP, gave invigorating presentations leading into an interactive discussion with a panel of experts. Traci Smet’s enlightening presentation began with how nutritious, low calorie, low fat diets can lead to some of the most successful weight loss results. She then elaborated on how exercising at a moderate level 30 minutes a day most days a week and incorporating 2 days of resistance training can help kick start one’s weight loss. A good way to do this is by adding 30 minutes to each progressing week to create a fun and stimulating workout routine over time. She then expressed how social support and self-motivation interact and are keys to experiencing successful and lasting weight loss.

Dr. Celine Kline then began her interactive presentation about the value of coaching. Coaching increases motivation through accountability, gives clarity and direction, and promotes positive outcomes. She then expressed how positive energy, actions, thinking, communication, enthusiasm, and optimism build a positive attitude that is a vital aspect of any weight loss program. Dr. Kline was then joined by Dr. Dan Kraeger, Director of Ministry Point Sports Medicine; Kit Werner, RD, with Ministry Health Care Diabetes Services; and Jackie Meyers, Pilates Fitness Instructor at the Stevens Point YMCA. The audience then had the opportunity to the question the panel of experts involving everything from strength training to craving control. The experts replied with in-depth and useful answers and ideas such as how to personalize a resistance-training program for one’s self and the importance of determining the real cues of one’s cravings in order to overcome them.
